What is inflation?

Inflation is the general rise in prices across the economy over time, so each dollar buys a little less than it did before. At 3% a year, something that costs $100 today would cost about $103 a year from now.

It can come from demand outpacing what the economy can supply, from rising costs such as fuel, wages or imported goods, or from money growing faster than output. A small, steady rate is normal; high inflation erodes savings and makes planning harder.

What is the CPI?

The Consumer Price Index tracks the prices of a fixed basket of goods and services that households typically buy: food, housing, transport, clothing, health and more. Each item is weighted by its share of household spending.

The basket's cost is compared to a base period set to 100, so an index of 110 means prices are 10% higher than in the base period. The inflation rate is the percentage change in the index, for example from one quarter to the next or against the same quarter a year earlier.
